The power of collective magic
Individual magic is powerful but collective magic is unstoppable…
Amplifying our individual power through communal practices
Most of us come to magic for our own goals and intentions. Maybe you learned from a book or saw a video, maybe you figured it out on your own or maybe you're still figuring it out.
But when it comes to doing the actual spell work, you're probably practicing alone. You set the intention, light the candle, and send your energy toward your desire. That's your personal magic.
So what happens when you connect your magic to others? What happens when a hundred people light candles at the same time and focus on the same vision? That's not just random energy. That's energy that’s been multiplied and channelled to a specific result. And that's what collective magic is about.
We’ve always used collective magic
The idea of collective magic isn’t a new one. Humans have gathered with shared intention for as long as we've existed: in circles, in ceremonies, in sacred spaces both formal and improvised. Every culture has its version of collective ritual because every culture has understood, intuitively, that some things are too big to face alone. In celebration and for revolution.
In times of crisis especially, people have turned to communal practice not as an escape from reality but as a way to face it together. When systems fail and governments abandon people, when the weight of the world becomes genuinely unbearable… communities gather. They focus, hold a shared vision of something better, and refuse to let it go. We're doing the same thing and adding magic.
How we show up together matters
People always ask me what it feels like to be in a collective intention circle. The answers vary, because everyone experiences magic differently. Some attendees describe a feeling of warmth and being connected, some feel a sense of expansion, and some just feel deeply calm in a way they haven't felt in a while. Many people describe a sense of empowerment and hope. But here's what everyone always comes back to: the energy is palpable. You can feel it when a group focuses together. It's different from meditating alone or doing solitary spell work.
Think about a tuning fork. If you strike one and hold it near another, the second one starts vibrating at the same frequency. That's the vibration resonating through each of them. When we gather with shared intention, even virtually, we create that same kind of vibration. Your energy amplifies mine, mine amplifies yours, and someone else's adds to both of ours. Suddenly we're not just individuals anymore, we’re a force.
We need collective magic
We're also living through a specific kind of loneliness right now. We're more "connected" than ever through technology and more isolated than ever in practice. You can scroll through hundreds of posts and still feel completely alone in what you're experiencing. That isolation is hurting us and it contributes to making us feel powerless. Collective magic is one antidote to that. Even in a virtual circle, you feel it: you're not the only one who's angry and you’re not the only one who wants things to be different. You're also not the only one willing to show up.
Collective magic needs you
And your personal magic doesn't disappear when you join a collective circle. It comes with you. Every ritual you do on your own, every intention you set, every time you ground your energy and work with your intuition, you’re building something. And that something is what you bring to the collective. Whether you're brand new to this work or you've been practicing for decades, your energy matters.
Collective magic isn't a quick fix
But let me be honest about something. Showing up to a circle or participating in a group spell won't fix everything. It won't pass legislation or feed anyone's kids or stop an unjust policy on its own. And collective practice isn't always easy, either. Gathering people together with shared intention takes consistency, trust, and a willingness to keep showing up even when results aren't immediately visible.
Some people come to collective magic looking for a shortcut and leave disappointed. Others show up once, feel something real, and never come back because life gets in the way. That's okay. This isn't about perfection or perfect attendance. It's about what happens when you do show up and what becomes possible when more of us do it consistently.
This also isn't about bypassing the hard work that needs doing in the world. Collective magic is meant to supplement that work, not replace it. It's about channeling our combined energy toward positive change so we have the strength to keep showing up and doing what needs to be done.
Where to start
There's no single right way to practice collective magic. What matters is that you start somewhere and that you stay curious about what becomes possible when you connect your energy with others. A few suggestions for where to begin:
Show up with intention. You don't need years of practice, special tools, or even a clear understanding of how it all works. You just need to be willing to focus your energy on what you want to create instead of what you're afraid of.
Find your people. Collective magic requires community. Look for circles, groups, or spaces (virtual or in person) where people are gathering with shared intention and shared values.
Bring your whole self. Your perspective, your practice, your particular kind of rage or grief or hope… it all of it adds to the collective energy. Don't wait until you feel ready or qualified.
Keep doing your personal work. The daily practice you build on your own is what you bring to the collective. Individual and collective magic aren't in competition, they strengthen each other.
The world feels so heavy right now. The news is relentless and it feels like injustice is everywhere. But that's exactly why this matters so much. We're not meant to carry all of this alone. And we don't have to.
